My first online course took eleven months to build.

Not eleven months of focused, productive work. Eleven months of scattered effort, half-finished modules, rerecorded lessons because the audio quality wasn’t right, a workbook I rewrote three times, and a launch that felt anticlimactic for how much I’d put into it. The course itself was good — students got results and said so. But the process nearly broke me, and I swore I’d find a better way before I ever built another one.

The second course took six weeks. Same depth, similar length, better production quality, and a more structured learning experience than the first one. The difference wasn’t that I worked harder or got faster at video editing. The difference was that I’d rebuilt my entire creation workflow around AI tools that handled the parts of course creation that had previously eaten all my time.

I want to be specific about what those tools are and exactly how I use them, because the generic “use AI to build courses faster!” content floating around is mostly vague and not that useful. Here’s what actually works.

The Problem With Course Creation Nobody Talks About Honestly

Building a course isn’t primarily a knowledge problem. Most course creators know their subject deeply. The problem is everything around the knowledge — structuring it coherently, scripting lessons, producing video, writing the supporting materials, creating assessments, building marketing content, and doing all of that consistently across 20 or 30 or 50 lessons without running out of steam.

That’s a production problem more than a knowledge problem, and AI tools are extraordinarily good at production problems.

The trap I fell into with my first course: treating everything as equally important and doing everything manually. My second course worked because I identified exactly which parts of the process were bottlenecks and put AI tools on those specific things.

Claude and ChatGPT — For Course Outline and Lesson Scripting

I’ll start here because this is where most course creators should start, and the use case is more sophisticated than “ask AI to write my content.”

The best use I’ve found for Claude (my current preference over ChatGPT for longer-form structured work, though both do this well) is curriculum architecture. Not writing the content — structuring the learning journey.

Here’s the prompt approach that changed everything for me:

I give Claude my course topic, my target student (their current skill level and what they’re trying to achieve), and then ask it to build a curriculum where each module creates the foundation for the next, with explicit learning outcomes for each lesson. I ask it to identify the most common mistakes students make at each stage and flag which concepts people typically find counterintuitive.

That last part — counterintuitive concepts — produces something I couldn’t easily generate myself because I’m too close to my subject. When you’ve known something for years, you forget what was confusing when you first learned it. AI, drawing from a wide range of explanations and student questions it’s been trained on, often catches the conceptual sticking points that expert creators miss.

The output becomes my course skeleton. Then I go lesson by lesson and use Claude to develop scripts — not to write them verbatim, but to generate a first draft I then rewrite in my own voice. That rewrite step is important. A lesson script that sounds like me makes a much better video than one that sounds like a capable but generic AI assistant.

My actual step-by-step process:

Step 1: Prompt Claude with your topic, audience, and transformation (what does the student know/be able to do after completing this course that they couldn’t before?).

Step 2: Ask for a module-by-module outline with three to five lessons per module, each with a stated learning objective.

Step 3: Review the outline critically. Move things around, cut anything that’s fluff, add anything that’s missing from your specific knowledge of the subject.

Step 4: For each lesson, prompt: “Write a first-draft script for a 7–10 minute lesson on [specific topic]. The student already understands [prerequisite]. The lesson should cover [main points] and end with a clear summary of the single most important takeaway.”

Step 5: Rewrite each script in your voice before recording. This step takes 15–20 minutes per lesson instead of the 60–90 minutes starting from blank.

Descript — For Video Production Without Being a Video Editor

I was spending four to six hours editing a single 20-minute course lesson before I found Descript. That number is not an exaggeration, and it was the single biggest time drain in my first course build.

Descript records and edits video by letting you edit the transcript. Delete words from the text, they disappear from the video. It transcribes automatically, removes filler words and long silences in bulk, and lets you make word-level corrections by typing rather than hunting through waveforms.

For course creators specifically, the most valuable feature is the ability to do “text-based editing” of talking head video. If I stumble over a sentence and re-record it immediately, I can cut the mistake out of the transcript view in about five seconds. If I want to remove a paragraph I decided is redundant, I select it in the transcript and delete. The video updates in real time.

The Overdub voice cloning feature has specific utility for courses: when you’re updating course content months later and need to fix a sentence or two in an existing lesson, you can type the correction rather than re-recording the whole segment. The cloned voice isn’t perfect, but for a one-sentence correction buried in a 15-minute lesson, it passes.

One honest note: Descript’s export quality and file management have had occasional quirks in my experience. I always keep the original raw video files until a project is fully published, because I’ve had a few moments where I wanted to go back to the original. Don’t treat Descript as your archive.

Synthesia — When You Want Video Without Appearing on Camera

Not every course creator wants to be on camera. Some people find it uncomfortable, some are building courses on topics where a talking head isn’t necessary, and some just don’t have the time or setup for regular recording sessions.

Synthesia lets you create video lessons using AI avatars that read your script. You type or paste the text, select an avatar, and get a polished video back — no camera, no microphone, no editing. For slide-based or explanation-heavy lessons where a human on screen doesn’t add much, the quality is genuinely good enough for professional courses.

I’ve used Synthesia for supplementary content — short recap videos between modules, “what’s coming up” transition videos, and FAQ responses that would be tedious to record but work well as quick avatar explainers. I wouldn’t use it for my main content where my teaching style and personality are part of the value, but for functional supporting content it’s saved hours.

The interface is simple enough that you don’t need any video production experience. The main learning curve is writing scripts that work well as read-aloud text — shorter sentences, no complex clause structures, language that sounds natural when spoken rather than written.

Murf AI — For Professional Voiceovers on Supplementary Materials

Similar territory to Synthesia but specifically for audio. If you’re creating explainer videos using screen recordings or slide-based content rather than a talking head, Murf generates natural-sounding voiceovers from your script.

The variety of voices has improved substantially. You can select voices by accent, tone, and style, and the pacing controls let you adjust speed and emphasis without re-recording anything. I use Murf for my screen recording walkthroughs — the kind of software tutorial or demo where you’re showing something on screen and narrating over it.

The alternative to Murf for this is recording your own voiceover every time you update a tutorial — and software tutorials need updating constantly when tools change their interfaces. Being able to update the script text and regenerate the audio in two minutes instead of re-recording is a meaningful workflow improvement.

Canva with Magic Studio — For Every Visual Asset

Canva isn’t purely an AI tool, but its AI-assisted features (collectively called Magic Studio) have made it the tool I use for every visual element in my courses — workbooks, slide decks, social graphics, course thumbnails, promo images, and infographics.

Magic Design generates complete design templates from a text prompt and a colour preference. Text to Image generates custom illustrations and images without stock photo licensing concerns. Magic Write assists with the text content in design layouts.

For course creators, the most useful is probably the combination of Magic Design and Canva’s template library for course workbooks. I describe the style and purpose, generate a starting template, then customize it for my branding and content. A 20-page course workbook that used to take me a full day now takes about three hours — and looks more professional than what I was producing manually.

The Brand Kit feature (available on paid plans) saves your fonts, colors, and logos so everything you produce maintains consistent branding across all your course materials without thinking about it.

Typeform and Notion AI — For Assessments and Knowledge Checks

Assessments are the part of course creation most people find most tedious to write, and they’re also the part that’s hardest to make genuinely useful rather than just box-checking exercises.

I use Claude to generate assessment questions — not just multiple choice, but scenario-based questions that test actual application of the concepts rather than rote recall. I give it the lesson content and ask for five questions at different levels of difficulty: recall, comprehension, and application. It generates good starting material that I then edit for my specific context and student level.

Notion AI has become useful for the administrative side of course creation: writing FAQs, generating course description copy, summarizing feedback from beta students into actionable revisions, and drafting the email sequences that go out to enrolled students. The deep Notion integration means my course notes, scripts, and planning documents are all in one place with AI assistance available throughout.

ElevenLabs — For Serious Audio Quality Without a Recording Studio

If audio quality is a priority and you want your recorded voice to sound its best even in imperfect recording environments, ElevenLabs‘ voice enhancement tools (separate from their AI voice generation) clean up recordings in ways that used to require professional audio engineering.

I travel periodically and occasionally record lessons in hotel rooms or home environments that aren’t acoustically ideal. Running those recordings through enhancement before using them in courses means the quality difference between my home studio and a hotel room disappears from the listener’s perspective.

For course creators who do any kind of remote or travel recording, this is genuinely useful and underused.

The Mistakes That Slowed Me Down

Trying to use AI to write lesson content I then delivered verbatim. Students can tell. The AI voice and the authentic teaching voice are different things, and the authentic one builds trust. Use AI for structure and drafts; speak in your own words.

Generating a full course worth of content before testing with a single student. I built eight modules before letting anyone see the material in my first course. Several modules needed significant restructuring based on early feedback. Now I build module one, get a beta student through it, revise based on their experience, then continue. AI tools make content generation fast enough that this iterative approach doesn’t slow you overall.

Using AI-generated images without checking them carefully. I published a workbook with an AI-generated graphic that had a subtle but noticeable anatomy error — a hand with the wrong number of fingers. A student pointed it out politely in a course review. Check everything visual before publishing, even from reputable tools.

Skipping the voice rewrite on AI-generated scripts. The lessons I’ve received the most positive feedback on are the ones where I rewrote the AI draft most aggressively. The ones I mostly kept as-is tend to generate less engagement and less emotional connection with students.

Relying on one AI tool for everything. Different tools genuinely do different things better. The combination of Claude for structure and scripting, Descript for video editing, Canva for visuals, and Synthesia for supplementary content covers more of the workflow more effectively than any single platform.


Building my second course in six weeks instead of eleven months didn’t mean the course was thinner or less valuable — if anything, the more structured approach produced better learning outcomes than my first attempt. The time I saved on production went into making the actual teaching better.

That’s the real value of these tools for course creators. Not cutting corners, but redirecting time from the mechanical work of production toward the part only you can do: knowing your subject, understanding your students, and teaching in a way that actually helps people learn.
